The NFC Util

Support, troubleshooting, and answers for reading, creating, saving, and writing NFC tags.

Getting Started

Read an NFC tag

  1. Open The NFC Util and tap Read NFC Tag.
  2. Hold the top edge of your iPhone close to the NFC tag.
  3. Keep the phone still until the scan completes.
  4. Review the tag contents and use Chip Information for technical details.

Write an NFC tag

  1. Tap New NFC and select the content type.
  2. Enter and verify the content you want to store.
  3. Tap the Write button, then hold the top of your iPhone near a writable NDEF tag.
  4. Keep the phone and tag still until writing completes.

Writing requires an active subscription. Up to five successful NFC reads are included free. NFC features require a compatible physical iPhone and do not operate in the iOS Simulator.

Troubleshooting

The iPhone does not detect the NFC tag

Start a scan inside the app, remove other nearby tags, and place the top edge of the iPhone directly against the tag. Move slowly around the tag if its antenna position is unknown. Confirm that the tag is NDEF-compatible.

The app says the tag is not writable

The tag may be permanently locked, unsupported, damaged, or protected by another system. Try a blank NTAG213, NTAG215, or NTAG216 tag from a reputable supplier.

The content is too large for the tag

Use a tag with more storage or shorten the stored text or URL. NTAG213 has less available capacity than NTAG215 and NTAG216.

Why does an iPhone not automatically join Wi-Fi from the NFC tag?

iOS does not automatically process a Wi-Fi text record during a background NFC tap. Open The NFC Util, tap Read NFC Tag, scan the tag, and then tap Join Wi-Fi Network. iOS will request confirmation before joining.

Can the app copy payment cards, badges, keys, or identification?

No. Protected payment cards, identity credentials, building badges, car keys, and other secured NFC credentials generally cannot be copied. The app is designed for user-created NDEF tag content.

Subscription Help

The annual subscription unlocks NFC writing and unlimited NFC reading. Eligible customers receive a three-day free trial before the annual charge begins.

Restore a purchase

Open Settings in the app and tap Restore Purchases. Use the same Apple Account that originally purchased the subscription.

Manage or cancel

Subscriptions are billed and managed by Apple. You can change or cancel your subscription from Apple’s subscription management page.

Manage Apple Subscriptions

Cancel at least 24 hours before the current subscription period ends to avoid renewal. Deleting the app does not cancel an active subscription.
